Website cost in India: what to actually expect
What a website really costs in India, and why the number changes so much from one quote to the next.
Ask five agencies what a website costs and you will get five different numbers, sometimes ten times apart from each other. That is not agencies being dishonest. It is because a website cost in India depends entirely on what is actually being built, and most quotes do not explain that clearly.
This guide breaks down what usually goes into the price, so the next quote you get actually makes sense.
Why the price range is so wide
A one-page site built from an existing template and a fully custom platform with a backend, admin panel, and payment integration are both technically a website. They have almost nothing else in common. One takes a day. The other takes weeks of design, development, and testing.
Most confusing quotes happen when this difference is never spelled out. A number without a scope attached is not really a quote, it is a guess.
The three tiers, and what each one actually includes
A pre-made template, picked as-is with your logo and content swapped in, is the fastest and cheapest option. Turnaround is usually a day, revisions are limited, and there is little to no ongoing support. This suits someone who needs to be online quickly and does not need anything unusual.
A lightly customised build, where a template is adapted to your brand colours, fonts, and structure, sits in the middle. Expect a turnaround measured in days rather than hours, a couple of revision rounds, and basic SEO setup included. This is the right fit for most small businesses that want something that looks like theirs, not off the shelf.
A fully custom build, designed and developed from a blank page with a discovery call, wireframes, and multiple design rounds, is the most expensive and the slowest, often taking several weeks. This is worth it only when your business genuinely needs something a template cannot offer, like a unique booking flow or a specific admin dashboard.
Costs that often get left out of a quote
Domain registration and hosting are frequently quoted separately, and prices vary depending on whether you go with an Indian registrar or an international one. Ask whether GST invoicing and UPI payment are supported if that matters to you.
Ongoing support after launch is another gap. Some builders hand off the files and disappear. Others include a fixed window, commonly 30 days, of bug fixes and small tweaks. Always ask what happens the week after your site goes live, not just on launch day.
Source code ownership is worth confirming upfront too. A lower price sometimes comes with the builder retaining the source files, which limits your ability to move to another developer later.
How to compare quotes properly
Instead of comparing the final number alone, compare three things side by side: turnaround time, number of revisions included, and what happens after launch. Two quotes that look far apart on price often turn out to be solving very different problems.
A fair quote should also let you see the actual work before you pay for it. If a builder cannot show you a real example of similar work, that is a bigger red flag than the price itself.
What to expect at each budget level
At the lower end, expect a clean, professional template with your branding, live within a day, and minimal ongoing support. In the middle range, expect a site tailored to your business with a couple of rounds of changes and basic SEO. At the top end, expect a website built around your specific workflow, with design choices made for your business rather than picked from a menu.
None of these is automatically the right choice. The right one is whichever matches how much customisation your business genuinely needs right now, not how impressive the number sounds.
