How to choose a domain name for your business

A practical guide to picking, checking, and registering a domain name that actually works for your business.

A domain name is one of the few decisions in building a website that is genuinely hard to undo later. You can redesign a site in a weekend and change your pricing overnight, but once a domain name is printed on a signboard, shared on WhatsApp, or indexed by Google for a few months, switching it means starting your visibility from zero again.

That makes it worth ten extra minutes of thought before you register anything. Here is what actually matters.

Keep it short, and easy to say out loud

The real test for a domain name is not how it looks on a screen, it is how it sounds when you tell someone over the phone or shout it across a counter. If a customer has to ask you to spell it, or guess where the hyphen goes, you have already lost some of them before they type it in.

Avoid hyphens and numbers where possible. A domain like shreebit-solutions.in forces every person who hears it spoken aloud to guess whether there is a dash, and a surprising number will type it wrong and land on nothing.

Match it to your business name, not a keyword

It is tempting to stuff a domain with a searched keyword, something like bestclinicinlucknow.in, hoping it helps with search rankings. It rarely does much for SEO today, and it actively hurts brand recall. Nobody remembers a keyword-stuffed domain, and it does not build a business you can put on a signboard, a visiting card, or a WhatsApp Business profile with any pride.

Your business name, or a short recognisable version of it, will always outperform a keyword domain for the thing that actually matters: people remembering you and coming back directly.

.com, .in, or something else

For most Indian businesses, .in and .com are both solid choices, and the honest answer is that either works fine. .in signals a domestic, India-focused business clearly, and it is often easier to register with local KYC support. .com is the more globally recognised extension and is worth choosing if you expect customers outside India or simply prefer the familiarity.

What matters more than the extension is availability of your exact business name. A slightly awkward compromise on a good extension beats a perfect name buried under a confusing one, like adding random numbers or extra words just to get something free.

What domain registration in India actually involves

Registering a .in domain requires basic KYC documentation, typically an identity and address proof, since .in domains are regulated more strictly than international extensions. This is a one-time step during registration and is usually quick if the documents are ready in advance.

It is also worth checking whether your registrar supports GST invoicing and UPI payment if you want the purchase to show up cleanly in your business accounting. Not every registrar offers this by default, and it is a fair question to ask before you pay.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

Buying a domain from an unfamiliar registrar because it is a few rupees cheaper, only to find renewal is complicated or support is unresponsive a year later. Registering multiple extensions of the same name out of caution, when in practice owning the one you will actually use and share is what matters most. And waiting too long to register a name you like, since domain names are registered on a first-come basis and a good one can disappear overnight.

A subdomain can be a fine place to start

If you are not ready to commit to a custom domain yet, starting on a subdomain, something like yourbusiness.shreebit.in, is a reasonable way to launch quickly and move to your own domain later once you are certain of the name. Many SaaS products follow exactly this pattern, offering a free subdomain to start and a custom domain as an upgrade once a business is ready to commit.
